The Northern Lights have long danced across the skies, transcending borders and cultural divides. Sometimes our human eyes mute the Aurora’s brilliance, while at other times it consumes our senses. In many ways, our human experiences of gender are just as mysterious, vibrant and uniquely personal.

Photographer and author Jayme Sojourn Drew shares intimate portraits and personal narratives from 50+ gender-diverse people across Alaska and Yukon. Many stories weave the intricacies of gender into our connections with nature, place and Indigenous histories. With reflective curiosity and vulnerability, Drew also interlaces pieces of their own gender journey and travels through 2SLGBTQ+ communities.

This anthology uplifts voices often unseen, not only for queer eyes and ears, but for anyone ready to view humanity through a wider lens.  With openness and care, readers are invited to discover that gender is something to witness, embrace, and celebrate.

Jayme Sojourn Drew is a queer photographer, writer and traveler. ‘Northern Lights, Northern Lives’ features essays from 50+ storytellers of all genders.
