Kyle’s Story: Growing Up Trans and Breaking “Oldest Daughter” Expectations

Kyle’s story

Gender: transman

Sexuality: pansexual

Pronouns: he/him

Current home: Norfolk, Virginia

From:  Originally Suffolk, Virginia

Cultural Background/Identity: low income white autistic trans man, oldest of 7

Interests: Activism, community organizing, tarot, astrology, internet deep dives, weed

I grew up the oldest daughter of a family with seven kids. I wore baggy shirts and jeans exclusively until puberty hit. Then I grew DDs and got hella hips. I still preferred jeans and T-shirts, but clothes like that didn’t fit my body how I liked. Everything was tight and showed too much of my body.  All my guy friends liked me and yet I didn’t like doing “girly” things, so I always felt left out.

The emotional and social expectations of oldest daughters is INSANE. And unraveling it all as a 27 year old man living with my younger siblings has been dramatic and painful. So much was expected of me that would never have been expected of an older brother.
